Berlin - Bornholmer Straße - Bösebrücke
Bornholmer Straße - Bösebrücke
The events of November 9, 1989
At 20:00, German Socialist Unity Party spokesman Günter Schabowski had issued an incorrect statement regarding an immediate East German lifting of border controls due to a misunderstanding. Immediately afterwards, thousands of East Germans began to gather at the border crossing at Bornholmer Straße, demanding that the border guards immediately open the gates and let them pass into West Berlin.
Posters have been erected at the former border crossing
The surprised and overwhelmed guards made many hectic phone calls to their superiors, but none of the East German authorities would take responsibility. The result was that the few soldiers had no opportunity to repel the large crowd of East German citizens. Eventually the guards gave in to the growing crowd.

At 21:20, the guards allowed people to pass
into West Berlin to relieve the pressure from the crowd, although the head of
the passport control, Lieutenant Colonel Harald Jaeger, had their passports
stamped invalid, thereby expelling the departed in practice without their
knowledge.
By 11:30 p.m., the crowd had grown so large that he - still without official
orders - raised the bar. In the next hour, about 20,000 Bösebrücke crossed
without being checked.
If you want to watch a very well-dramatized TV movie showing the events leading
up to the opening of the border barrier in Bornholmer Str., The German film
"Bornholmer Straße" is highly recommended.
